Mary Lou may not have a shadow, but she's got an
album full of hooks. On her debut for a major, Ms. Lord has produced an album of
folky ear candy that deftly balances her sweet voice with the power of a full rock and
roll band.Anyone familiar with her releases on Kill Rock Stars may be a bit disappointed that she's bolstered her acoustic guitar and vocals with a band, perhaps finally saying goodbye to her busking days. I suggest that all preconceptions be tossed aside and to listen to the album without any thought as to what she used to be. Got No Shadow is simply a catchy as hell record that should please anyone looking for a good time. Some of her previous "hits" have been rerecorded, like "Western Union Desperate" and "Jingle Jangle Morning," and they sound just as good backed up as they did when she sang them alone, albeit some of the innocent charm is lost in the translation. Other highlights include a sparkling cover of Freedy Johnston's "The Lucky One" and an Elliott Smith-accompanied "Shake Sugaree". With the recent explosion of female artists, Mary Lou might get overlooked. That would be a shame. Granted, she's not full of angst, she doesn't take herself too seriously, and she's not neatly packaged for glossy videos. All she's done is made a solid album that makes the day seem better when listened to. What more can be asked? --review by Heath Yonaites |
