I’m sure you’re wondering why I just didn’t get an iPhone, which I researched, thought about, and sweated over for the better portion of a year. Short answer: I’m with Verizon on multiple phone lines. So, there’s that.

I was an early adopter of PDAs, and mine traveled the world with me. Though fairly primitive at the time, I had an mp3 player module, a phone module, and a screen the size of an iPhone–the entire phone, not just the iPhone’s screen. I used it to keep notes, read books, and play the occasional game. It even accepted SD cards.

Fast forward to not long ago. Having determined it was not practical to get an iPhone, I got the Verizon-friendly Motorola Droid phone. I have to say, it was nice. Real nice. Felt good in the hand, good screen, excellent size, the UI was generally attractive and easy to use.

However, there was one thing about it I could not get past, and that was that the applications available for it felt like I stepped back more than a decade and was using my old PDA. User interfaces were inconsistent, applications had no base-line consistency in operation, and for the most part, crashed. Ultimately, this is the major difference between the iPhone and any phone with the Droid OS. Everything on the iPhone has to be blessed by the high priests of Apple and personally vetted by Steve Jobs in a ritual similar to finding a new pope, white smoke and everything…okay, maybe not, but Apple still has some oversight on the apps for the iPhone. Everything on the Droid feels like it’s in beta.

In its defense, the Motorola phone allowed you to store data on it, though saving the data and getting to the data was a bit cumbersome. The Droid phone also has a flash for the camera, which is a nice feature. And it did have a nice weight.

I traveled with the phone for a week, and simply found it to be not worth hanging onto. Thankfully, switching back to my previous Verizon plan was easier than setting up the new phone in the first place.

Oh, wait, there was one more thing. The keyboard was completely worthless. A great feature to include, the keys were too small, too flat and unresponsive to have practical worth. Same with the little thumb-pad.

Light Touch

This cool device turns any hard surface into a interactive screen. Its software is limited at this time but I think in the near future there will be computer screen similar to this like in the 2 newest James Bond movies. It features up-and-coming tech like holographic laser projection technology that allows it to create a high-quality WVGA resolution image up to 10 inches. It has an infra-red touch sensing system to turn the projected image into a touch screen. In addition, it runs Flash Lite, allowing for a bunch of different applications, it also has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for connectivity, 2GB of onboard memory, and a microSD slot for expansion. pretty sweet if you ask me.

Despite the truth of the title, I’m not going to spend any time bashing this product, for two, make that three, reasons. First, the myPressi company was kind enough to send a test version where the competing company (Handpresso) was not. Second, when I had problems with the unit, the PR firm picked up the phone right away and answered all my questions and thanked me for my input. And third…well, if you can get it to work, this is probably just the thing you’re looking for.

Hit the clicky thingie to read more…

The myPressi TWIST (http://mypressi.com/) is a hand-held portable espresso maker. It uses CO2 cartridges (included) to generate pressure, and hot water (not included) to

The TWIST in action.

steam the espresso. Screw the back off the handle and that’s where the CO2 goes, unscrew the upper hemisphere of the body, that’s where the espresso goes, unscrew the lid on the top, that’s where the water goes. Pull the trigger. That’s it. When you get it to work.

I’m going to suppose the TWIST (caps theirs) requires a good deal of practice to get working. Assuming you haven’t used it as a murder weapon–it’s actually quite heavy for its size, speaking to a good quality, well-made product–it takes some time to get everything set up right, despite the general lack of moving parts. Basically, you’d think things were obvious, but they were not.

I wanted an espresso maker for my home that wouldn’t take up any space, so I had great hopes for the TWIST. In fact, my hopes were so great, I asked the owner of a local store to try the unit, as well. This is what she wrote:

“The quality of the equipment looks good but I found it hard to use because it was hard to grip when trying to screw the various components in their appropriate position.

In following the directions, everything seemed to be fairly easy to follow. We tried the product twice because the first time didn’t seem to produce enough espresso and the second time we actually got nothing (not a drop) even though we did everything the same as the first time. Literally…nothing came out. The espresso that came out of the hand held machine from our first try was awful tasting. I mean…disgusting.

Therefore, maybe the advantage would be for a camping trip situation but not for everyday use. But I am not sure if this product can provide quality results since we weren’t able to make that happen.”

When I tried it, I worked with a barista, and we needed a few tries to get it working, too, though our results were not disgusting.

So, what can I tell you? If you’re going camping and want espresso-y goodness near at hand, the TWIST is probably just the thing. As soon as they make the directions more clear.

Thanks to the good people at http://atworkdesign.com/ for testing the unit.

PS Is it just me, or does the TWIST look like the Discovery from 2001?

Kees van Dijkhuizen released a video of the films of 2008 edited down into 6 min and 18 seconds. With the end of the year coming, he has done it again with a year of movies 2009. He used 342 movies some blockbuster some indie and everything in between. This is a really great look back at the movies of 2009, and with the Pause.com year in review episode coming out soon I thought it would be a cool thing for all to see. Click Here to enjoy
