NBC’s Sci Fi channel, often ridiculed for the decisions made by its seemingly moronic leaders, has outdone itself now by changing its name, officially, to SyFy. Maybe they thought people were too stupid to spell Sci Fi and that’s why the numbers of some of their programs are so low. Or it could be, as their press release said, that SyFy was trademarkable. Ah, that explains it…money. Natch.

Well, that’s all fine, but I have to question the network’s decision to get away from “pure” sci fi programming (said with tongue firmly implanted in cheek, which anybody who’s seen many of the net’s original films will understand) and embrace other genres more openly, such as fantasy, paranormal, supernatural, reality, mystery, action and adventure. Worse yet are some of the channel’s upcoming programs, such as:

• The Syence of Movies
• The Truth Behind Syentology
• Help! My Hair is on Fyr!
• Syence and Relijun
• The Syatic Nerve and You
• Zachari Quynto: Mi Lyfe As Scilar

(I don’t even get that last one)

Ok, all kidding aside, as stupid as this idea seems, the broadening of programming may end up being a good thing, if heavy-duty (read: expensive) shows like BSG are able to survive due to less expensive shows that have a broader audience. Although I see no reason why everybody who watches TV wasn’t watching BSG, there’s definitely an aversion to sy fy, er, sci fi in much of the population here in the U.S. If people can be wooed onto the channel through some other type of tangentially-related subject matter programming, that’s not necessarily all bad.

The new tagline, however, is: Imagine Greater?!
