As if there wasn’t already too much cool shiznit available on which to spend all the money we don’t have, along come stories like these below to heap another gazillion dollars worth of driveable fantasies on our poor shoulders. Hit the clicky thingie to see my least- to most-favorite of this group:

5) Gumpert Apollo

While I personally am not a huge fan of supercars that are pretty close, in many ways, to all-out track cars, I know there are a lot of you out there who’ll wet yourselves over something like the Apollo from Gumpert. Although it’s been around since 2005, it’s only just now that the first one has arrived to the U.S. and, according to AutoBlog, had some hard times this past weekend, namely getting stuck. On a speedbump. Now try to imagine yourself driving it on a typical American road. YeahIdontthinkso. Anyway, the Apollo runs with a specially-tuned Audi 4.2-liter V8, twin-turbocharged to output somewhere in the neighborhood of 800 bhp. That’ll run you $400k. Did I mention it got stuck on a speedbump? [AutoBlog]

4) IFRAutomotive Aspid

Looking like the secret love child of a Caterham and a robotic praying mantis, the Aspid from Spain’s IFRAutomotive is one seriously unique-looking vehicle. While it makes only half the bhp of the Apollo, by way of a supercharged 2-liter, 4-cylinder engine, the Aspid can rocket to 60mph in just 2.8 seconds. That number again was two-point-eight, just in case your eyes started to tear up after you read that. The Aspid SuperSport is set to go on sale in about a year’s time for $120,000-ish and you can reserve one for just $32k. That price also gets you a trip to Spain (always good if you ask me), stay at a luxury spa and a half-day’s test drive so you can make sure you want to part with the other $90k. [AutoBlog]

3) Lightning GT

Ooooh, what’s this? A challenger to the Coolest Electric Supercar on the Block throne? Look out, Tesla Roadster, because the car you see here is a British / Welsh all-electric supercar with 700 bhp and loads of luxury features (A/C, satnav, etc.). The manufacturer claims a 0-60 time of 4 seconds, and with 175 bhp at each wheel, that seems like a safe bet, even if it weighs as much as the Jaguars and Astons it sorta looks like. I say sorta because the resemblance is only from the front. Walk around to the back and the Lightning GT here ventures out into new territory. Nicely, I must say. No specific availability dates (other than “2009 delivery” or price has been set…or even if it’ll be available at all in the U.S. Expect it to be pricey, however. [AutoBlog

2) Ronn Scorpion

Not only do I love the swoopy, curvy looks of this American supercar, but the technology is also pretty space-age cool: The Scorpion by Ronn Motors uses a gas-hydrogen hybrid in a configuration known as hydrogen-on-demand. I could lie and say that I understand how it works, but that would be a waste of time. In essence, though, the system breaks down hydrogen from water and stores it (rather than having to have a hydrogen tank refilled) and mixes 30% – 40% of it with the gas to burn cleaner and increase fuel efficiency to somewhere on the order of 40mpg according to the manufacturer. And this from a 3.5-liter Acura VTEC 6-cylinder engine with twin turbos and an intercooler for a 3-and-a-half second 0-60 time. Supposedly it’s going on sale this fall. </swoon>. [AutoBlog]

1) BMW M1 Hommage

Although I’m nowhere near being a BMW fanboy, I have to say that this is my favorite of the five cars here, in terms of looks. Not only does it look seriously pissed, but able to do something dastardly about it, too. With equal parts original M1 and Something New, the Hommage looks the business from every angle. According to BMW, the Hommage is strictly a design study at this point. No drivetrain possibilities have been mentioned and the car doesn’t have an interior yet. But judging by the reaction to the car so far, I’d say that the folks in Munich are secretly weighing their options. Let’s keep our fingers crossed. [AutoBlog]
