Sure there are a zillion (read: ~900) iPhone apps in the App Store in this, the first week of the store’s existence. And sure, there are some great things in there like OneTap Movies, Bejeweled 2 (despite its tendency to reset the iPhone every other time it runs), G-Park and, of course, PhoneSaber.

But these apps are either conveniences or fun little softgadgets in and of themselves. But what about an app that you not only love, but need…and use every day? That app is finally here after a week of waiting: eWallet from Ilium Software. Keep reading after the clicky thingie…

I’ve been a big fan of eWallet on my WinMo device for a while now. It’s a password vault program that has a mobile component and a desktop component so that your computer and handheld device stay in sync. And one of the great things about it is that the sync is fast, feels very lightweight, and has always been more reliable (and easier to use) than ActiveSync / Sync Center. Which, you know, isn’t all that hard, but it needs to be said.

eWallet also makes it easy to keep two computers in sync using your handheld device. In fact, both Microsoft and Apple could learn a few lessons from Ilium in this respect, as my eWallet always “behaves” like I expect it to: I add something on one computer and it shows up on the handheld, then gets added to the other computer on next sync.

If I add something to the device, it ends up on both computers. If I remove something from any one place, that deletion is carried over to the other devices as well. Smart and simple.

eWallet is also very flexible, allowing you to store not only passwords, but all types of info: Bank account info, social security, general, personal, website info…you name it, there’s probably already a card type for it, and if not, you can customize them. And all of your data is secured with 256-bit AES encryption. I don’t really know what that means, but it sounds very high-tech and clever.

Ilium’s done a great job taking advantage of the iPhone interface and making eWallet very easy to use. In addition, I think they did a spiffy job visually, keeping the iPhone design language alive in how the cards are presented when you view them with gleams and reflections, etc. (although you get a simple, easy-to-navigate version when you’re creating the card).

On Ilium’s blog, they wrote about how only the iPhone portion of the app is available currently, but not the sync module. That portion will be available in August, and according to them, if you buy eWallet now, the sync module will simply show up as an app update when it’s available, at which time you’ll be able to sync the wallets on your iPhone with the desktop program. Which is good. Because eWallet is probably better at remembering stuff than you are. And it’s almost definitely better at sync’ing data between your iPhone and your computer than you are.

Until August, however, do yourself a huge favor and check out eWallet on the iPhone and get your wallet started…it’s an indespensible tool that remembers a lot of info for you so that your brain can concentrate on important things, like figuring out how to use the iPhone to actually control your simian avatar in Super MonkeyBall. And, so far, eWallet seems much more polished than most iPhone apps. Definitely worth the $10 you’ll pay for it.
