Researchers in Japan have created a new tech that creates 3D virtual objects in front of you using ultrasonic waves. Although the picture above really doesn’t show off anything, imagine that the pressure waves created by inaudible sound, focused on a specific point, can actually be felt…and by more than one person at a time. The technology has a long way to go, says Takayuki Iwamoto and his colleagues from the University of Tokyo. For one thing, too much power (which makes a more solid-feeling object) could, you know, blow out your eardrums. And that’s bad. Still, combined with some holographic projection, this tech, in a few years, could result in the first real-world example of a Trekkian holodec. And that’s good.
