Sci-Fi Greenlights ‘Stargate: Wormhole Extreme’, er, ‘Stargate: Universe’

In the Stargate: SG-1 season 5 episode ‘Wormhole Extreme’, one of the funniest bits is the younger cast of characters in the fake show. Much humor is made about this “hot, young cast” in the episode, but now it seems as that’s the only way Stargate’s producers could keep the franchise on the air.
Sci-Fi has announced that Stargate: Atlantis will not be picked up for a sixth season, and instead a new Stargate series titled Stargate: Universe, featuring…you guessed it, a hot, young cast…will begin.
I’m not sure what to make of this…SG-1 was a fantastic show, with 10 seasons of fun stories starting where the original film left off. Atlantis was a great spinoff, with its own extremely likable cast, threats and brand of humor. I’m sure if the same production team is involved, we can expect more of the same. But shame on Sci-Fi network for (I’m guessing) forcing this move. I’m sure fans would rather see SG-1 brought back or Atlantis continue than to see a new spinoff geared toward a younger generation of viewers.
What do you think?

Like you, I’ve loved SG1 and Atlantis. And I see no reason to cancel Atlantis just to produce a new Stargate franchise. It seems strange to just can Atlantis before the wraith are even dealt with.
And then just dump this Startrek Voyager knock off on us…

Yeah, the ‘new’ SG:U plot does feel like Star-Trek to me too! I mean the concept of finding a ship that drops off stargates into planets in uncharted part of the universe is a nice story line… but they are trapped in the ship with no way to get back to earth. -We’ve seen this so many times!! Voyager, and Farscape are the first two that I can think of right off the bat! Bring back the original SG1!!! I don’t see SGU making past 3 seasons.

Its not Sci Fi anymore. It’s SyFy and their new marketing slogan is supposed to mean more than science fiction. Its also supposed to appeal to a target market of young people. to hell with the die hard fans and never mind young people don’t have the buying power to support the advertisers. I expect most of the programing will have younger actors, more sexual tension, more hotties both male and female and far dumber plots, tho I don’t know how they can dumb down much more after seeing some of the movies SyFy greenlighted. Hopefully Caprica will at least be well done.

sure, some of the cast is young and there are some attractive people…because you know, all the other stargates had a bunch of ugly people.
The pilot was yesterday, and yes, there was one sex scene, but it wasn’t that steamy. In fact it’s about four times more dark and character oriented than all the other stargates. They don’t even try to throw in comedy except for that kid, but he barely counts. Most of the time everyone is arguing, unlike atlantis and sg-1 where everyone is always on good terms no matter what. Then you have the lighting, which is dark about 100% of the time, and the absence of fun adventure music for absolute silence.
There is almost nothing for a younger audience here in comparison to anything else that’s ever been done for the Stargate Franchise.

Yeah, I don’t get the whole “beautiful people” thing. Not to get too into it, but there were plenty of very attractive people on both previous SG shows, so, you know, whatever.
It seems pretty obvious that SyFy (still don’t enjoy typing that) wanted to veer more toward BSG than previous SG shows, which, again, I don’t get. The previous shows were FUN. I’m hoping this one will be, too.
Sure, Eli’s a great character in that he’s us…he’s the guy a lot of us wish we could be: The “regular” person who was let in on the secret. Sorta like Daniel Jackson was originally, except that DJ was also the only guy who believed what he believed and when it was validated, he became the expert in that teeny tiny field. With Eli, yeah, he’s really smart, but he’s also a video game playing regular guy, which is cool.
The biggest problem with the sex scene is that it just came across as an out-of-place nod to BSG more than something that was really lockstep with the tone of what SGU will be.
But there’s an even bigger issue that I’m going to address when we record this week’s show tomorrow…

I was going to off myself, then I saw the premiere and I was literally knocked off my chair. My friends heard the frantic gurgling and helped me get off my make shift noose. I started banging my head on the wall “I want to live! I want to live!” Yes I do want to live, until the season ends anyway.
A younger cast, check. Bad ass effects, check. No TEal’c, check. I’m not really offended, they did it to my beloved Star Trek and it wasn’t that bad. All in all, a stereotypically cookie cutter casting. We have the exact same show, with almost the exact same number of characters to FILL up. Like the Star Trek reboot I can see how the pace is geared towards a larger market. The chromatic abberation effect, looks like it happens when ships come out of FTL but that aside it is COOL as HELL, kinda like the Warp effects in the new Star Trek, it adds a visceral aesthetic informing the viewers that this is some really crazy shit.
I’m not particularly interested in any of the characters, they just seem to be adequate for the moment. Though Id love to see if they build up on the relationship between the aging Rush and the new kid on the block Eli. The most important thing I’d like to note is all throughout he show i kept whooping whenever Col. Carter showed up. She just keeps getting hotter, must be all that Asgard liquor she keeps stashed away in her.. wait im getting disrespectful. lols, coincidentally i just created a cause on facebook called “pause” as in pause for 1 second to think about what you’re going to say.

I loved SG1 and Atlantis. I wished they would have continued. SGU seems like 90210 in Space.

There’s no doubt about it. SGU sucks. I’m sorry. SG-1 and Atlantis were wonderful, but this is just the new Battlestar Galactica all over again. Horrible. š

I have to aggree. This is Battlestar Galactica all over!
The only thing that doesn’t make this to a all battlestar is the stargate it self, which is barely seen at all!

Worst show ever.
I can’t believe they cancelled atlantis for this.
I keep up with the drug market, but let me tell you, I have NO IDEA what these morons are on.
They turned Stargate into reality-tv/drama with practically no science, fiction, science-fiction, fun or action in it.

I think that after time, the show got better. The last few episodes before it too was canceled, were some of the best.

SG-U was horrid, the cast was wholey unlikable short of maybe 2 or 3 people. They killed off Atlantis for that piece of crap and now they say there will not be any more series based in the SG universe. What a waste. I remember when Sci-Fi was all about sci-fi and geekdom, now it’s all about re-runs and horrible wannabe b-movies.
Thank god for netflix.

I think its short life pretty much speaks for itself. There were illicit sex acts used to replace real drama and excitement. They introduced a team of people that were completely counter to what SG-1 and the Atlantis team were; that is the SG-U team cannot get along and is comprised of rejects which lack leadership skills. In short, Jack Oneill introduced us to what humanity and cooperation can do to improve our world, Dr Weir and her team continued that concept, but with their own brand of style and flair. However Dr Rush and the unfortunate Col Young were people that simply did not posses the ability to succeed in diplomacy, inclusion or leadership. I felt like they should have been in one of the parallel dimensions that were taken over by the “Snakes”.
