In the Mash-Up segment (~1:03:05) the news this week includes:

  • The Mercedes A-Class will, in fact, be coming to the U.S.
  • The new VW Beetle was also shown off at both the New York and Shanghai auto shows
  • Fiat will sell its 500 Cabrio here in the U.S. just in time for spring
  • VW has also shown off the first version of its new Green energy microbus concept, called the Bulli
  • A Toronto student from Beijing was video chatting with his girlfriend in China, when there was a knock at her door. She answered it, a guy came in, they struggled, and 10 hours later, the girl’s body was found in her basement apartment.
  • Walter Breuning, the oldest known man at age 114, has died in Montana
  • A perfume company called Fargginay has introduced a duo of…bacon-scented colognes: Citrus and spicy maple
  • Apple is in a bit of hot water, now that people have discovered that the iPhone tracks you wherever you go, and stores location data in an unencrypted file that anybody can get to
  • In other Apple news, although there likely won’t be a new iPhone in July, there could be a new one this fall, maybe in September
  • Match.com has begun screening daters to weed out sex offenders
  • Geophysicists have discovered, alarmingly, that the underground lava plume that feeds the Yellowstone supervolcano is actually 400 miles across
  • Verizon’s FiOS cable TV service is getting a new, widescreen guide. Version 1.9 of their Interactive Media Guide is higher resolution and has new search features, DVR enhancements, better support for 3D TVs and more
  • Researchers at the University of Maine have invented a golf ball made out of lobster shells
  • Early builds of Windows 8 have leaked out and one interesting thing is that it looks like it can be run, not just installed, but actually run, from a USB stick
  • Aston Martin has teamed up with Mobiado to create a concept transparent glass cell phone that’ll work with Aston Martin cars
  • A researcher at MIT has created electricity from water so efficiently, that someday in the near future, your home could be powered for an entire day from just a couple bottles of water
  • Toshiba has a new line of hard drives that self-encrypt and auto-erase if the drive is taken out of your computer and plugged into another one, so that your data can’t be stolen
  • Scientists have discovered that the magnetic fields coming from light waves are actually 100 million times stronger than previously thought, which could mean a whole new way to harness solar power
  • Acer’s Iconia Tab A500 will be out in a few days. It’s an Android 3 (Honeycomb) tablet with 1GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 16GB storage, a 1280×800 screen, 2MP and 5MP front and rear cameras
  • Finally, a 75 year old Georgian woman was collecting scrap metal, and cut up a piece of what she viewed as “valuable material”. That valuable material was fiber optic cable, and when she cut it, she cut off the internet in Georgia and Armenia
