Advertising Fail: Build With Windows 7
no images were found
I was reading an article on ZDNet a little while ago and noticed this ad from Microsoft for Windows 7, in which they try to convince you that moving your development to Windows 7 is a good idea by showing you what is, presumably, a big company who’s doing just that. Unfortunately, it would seem the ad creative team that developed this ad has some, shall we say, less-than-seasoned individuals on it. Individuals who seem to not know that FPO means “for placement only” and that the red square in the ad was supposed to be replaced with an actual developer’s logo.
Oops.

I’m slowly starting to lose my fascination with Win 7. In 2 days time, i’ve discovered two glaring omissions that have caused some serious problems. The first being that 7 doesn’t support USB wireless connectivity. If you’re able to get a wireless USB device to work or more importantly, recognized, it’s likely via outdated drivers or running in XP mode. The second, which we discovered today was the missing parental controls. I guess MS has decided not to bother adding any significant parental controls to the OS aside from adding game ratings and letting you choose an application (excluding IE) and is leaving it to 3rd party apps. The problem with this is there are no 3rd parties that have released any parental control software yet and none to be found on searches. So because of these two big problems, my son’s PC is getting an old copy of XP instead. Quite frustrating going from Vista to 7 and then back to the somewhat stable XP to keep my son from discovering things he shouldn’t be looking at online or playing when we’re not home.
Maybe this is why they’re missing the above advertiser. 🙂
Sorry, I’ll get off my soapbox.

you give a lot of good points Strich, this whole thing just reminds my of all the Mac vs. PC commercials where PC is trying to be as cool as mac and failing. I guess its better than Vista but is still lacking in some areas, to bad because the only reason I was holding back on getting Mac was Win 7. I have used both and Mac just does so much more user friendly things and you got to admit they haven’t changed the layout in OSx and it still is better than PC. So Strich stay on the soapbox… I will too

Hey Strich,
I haven’t tried the USB wireless thing yet, but maybe we’ll try to check it out, but Parental Controls are definitely there.
You go into Users and set them up there (I just verified this as I set up a Kids account and then set up the Parental Controls for it). Seems to be pretty much like the ones in Vista (which I like quite a bit).
Personally, I like Win 7 a lot so far, and I disagree that the Mac is much more user friendly. It’s all about what you’re used to.
I highly doubt that a person with no computer experience (and I literally mean none) would find the Mac any more intuitive or user friendly than a Windows machine at this point.

Agreed about user friendly. It’s what you’re used to working with. Honestly, OS X only has about a 2 hour learning curve to get around the whole thing. I’m still learning new stuff every day with it which i love.
We must have missed the PC section that you’re talking about, cause we did some searches on getting it set up and none of the screens online looked like ours (or it was missing the bottom part for the extended portion), but it’s to late now. I just put a copy of XP on it and then locked him out of anything online that we don’t want him accessing.

BTW, you guys have a contest going on right now? I remember you mentioning in on the last two podcasts, but i don’t know what it’s for or the rules. Are they posted anywhere on the site?

They’re not posted…just send a message (as many as you like) to podcast@pause.com with ideas for things for us to play, watch, go see at the movies, etc. Everything we talk about in the last episode of June will be derived from listener suggestions.
The people who suggest stuff that ends up in our best and worst entertainment moments of the week will win prizes (to be selected and determined by Tony and I heh)
