You remember Iomega…the company that was virtually synonymous with external storage when that meant Bernoulli, and then Zip disks? Well they’re still around and still cranking out storage products.

The newest members of their eGo line of portable hard drives are colorful, svelte little numbers that come bundled with Iomega’s Protection Suite. The software bundle includes McAfee Anti-Virus (blech…you should be paying me for this one, Iomega!), Iomega QuikProtect (simple backup solution), EMC Retrospect Express or Express HD (for more robust backup including applications and system settings) and MozyHome online backup, with 2GB free storage or unlimited storage for $4.95 / month, which actually isn’t too bad of a deal, if you don’t mind the crazy upload times or the fact that your data will be sitting on somebody else’s network.

At a smidge under 5.5″ x 3.5″ x .75″, the newest eGo drives are pretty nicely sized, and come in capacities of 250, 320 or 500GB. In addition to Ruby Red, there’s also Silver and Midnight Blue (sorry, no Camo version like with the earlier eGo models, so you won’t be able to be stealthy when using your portable hard drive in the woods).

The newest eGo is powered exclusively by USB (which is also the only data connection type) and features Iomega’s Drop Guard, guaranteed to keep your data safe even from a fall of up to 51″, which means that you should probably not walk around with the eGo on your head if you’re more than 4′ 4″ tall. Otherwise it’s ok.

Priced from $85 to $135, the new eGo drives won’t win any El Cheapo awards, but considering the claimed shock protection, the fact that no external power supply is needed, and the EMC backup software (which is usually…usually) pretty decent, they’re not unreasonably priced, either.

They’re available from Iomega directly now and should be available in stores / online retail soon.
