  • Fujifilm’s FinePix W3 is a point & shoot camera that’ll capture HD video in 3D
  • Spanair flight 5022 crashed just after takeoff from Madrid in 2008. Now investigators are saying that a ground-based system that detects trouble in airplanes that would have prevented the plane from taking off under normal circumstances was, in fact, infected with 3 trojan-type viruses and they prevented the system from doing its job. The investigation is still ongoing
  • People magazine will be the first title to be offered free on the iPad to print subscribers
  • A problem with Samsung Blu-ray players recently undergoing a firmware update is causing them not to play Warner or Universal movies. The 2.09 update causes those titles to lock up after displaying the title image
  • Sanyo’s VPC-PD2BK video camera is about $170, about the same form factor as a Flip, but shoots 1080p video at 30fps with stereo audio, has a flash, and will shoot 10MP stills
  • Apple is testing iOS 4.1 on an unknown gadget referred to internally as having ID 20547
  • Nikon’s D3100 is the first DSLR that’ll shoot 1080p video with autofocus, and it’s just $700
  • LG will show off a 31” OLED TV at the IFA electronics show next month
  • Apple’s in more trouble over its hyper-sensitive submersion sensor in the iPhone…there’s already a class action lawsuit against them, filed in California, by a woman who never had any liquid damage to her iPhone, but was told her warranty was voided because the sensor was triggered by ambient humidity. And now in some parts of Asia, people are having the same trouble
  • A Google tablet is slated (har har) to launch on Verizon on November 26th
  • The Beta of IE9 will launch on September 15th
  • Finally, Tomica will relaunch diecast toys here in the U.S., together with some pretty cool playsets to go with them

In TV (~22:55), Tony talks a little about Top Chef with Lou, who then follows up with Supernatural and Persons Unknown. Random TV news tidbits after that.

In Movies (~47:15), Lou saw Salt and both Tony and Lou saw The Other Guys. Miscellaneous movie news follows.

In the Mash-Up segment (~1:16:15) the news this week includes:

  • Google and Verizon have been under the microscope, thanks to an article in the New York Times that said they were engaging in an agreement related to Net Neutrality issues.
  • Clear has released their iSpot mobile 4G Wi-Fi hotspot for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. On day 1, it was $30 and $25 / month with no contract. The normal price of it is $100.
  • Audi has launched a petition…on Facebook…for people who want them to bring the TT RS to the U.S. The TT RS would be the fastest & sportiest of all TT variants and isn’t currently slated to come here.
  • Bing maps now has a taxi fare calculator, available in a few dozen cities.
  • Motorola will release the Droid 2 this fall, complete with an R2-D2 version, available only online from Verizon, that will feature Star Wars content and “external hardware” that’ll make it look more like R2-D2.
  • Mark Papermaster, who was the executive at Apple in charge of overseeing the iPhone’s development, has left the company, thanks to the iPhone 4 antenna problem that, according to Apple, isn’t actually a problem.
  • And there’s a rumor out there that Apple has known about the antenna issue for two years.
  • In other technology company executive firing news, HP’s CEO Mark Hurd was let go with a generous severance package after sexual harassment allegations arose regarding a contractor
  • An Asus phone running Windows Phone 7 has been spotted in the wild.
  • Sharp is planning on launching a glasses-free 3D smartphone sometime this year.
  • The very-cool Lancia Stratos “prototype” that was making the internet rounds in pictures was actually a one-off for a private collector, and was designed by Pininfarina. The original Stratos was designed by Bertone.
  • Samsung’s new FX2490HD monitor doubles as a 1080p TV. What’s weird is that it’s $540, which is about $100 more than the old 26” version that you could get a couple years ago.
  • Microsoft will release an Arc Touch Mouse next month for about $70, which will probably be more of a trackpad than a mouse. Or maybe not.
  • Gmail now allows you to open multiple accounts through multiple logins in the same browser
  • If you’re one of those people who’s always wanted a dedicated gaming chair, check out the X-Dream Dyroxus, available exclusively at Boys Stuff UK starting later this month. For about $650 you get something that looks like it was designed by Emperor Palpatine and that gyrates around based on the on-screen action so that you can be more immersed in your console gameplay.
  • Portland, OR is home to the first electric vehicle quick charge station in the U.S.
  • Sony’s Xperia X10 is finally going to be released and hopefully will be less-sucky than the original Xperia. It’ll definitely be less sucky pricing, at just $150 through AT&T.

Why Apple’s iPhone 4 Signal Strength Explanation is B.S.

Last week, Apple outed itself as a bunch of liars when they released an open letter to iPhone 4 owners stating, in effect, that holding the phone wrong wasn’t causing the signal to go down, but that the signal was always reported incorrectly. Oops.

The open letter was, in my opinion, a MASSIVE blunder by Apple. Here’s why…

Apple has basically admitted to two huge lies with their open letter. First is the lie about the “holding the phone wrong” thing. Apple has simply screwed up. I don’t know if nobody there ever tried to hold the phone “wrong” or if they simply wrote it off as more bad reception issues, but let’s face it, they screwed up.

Worse, though, is that Apple’s explanation that by “holding the phone wrong”, you’re actually getting the correct signal strength reading as opposed to the b.s. one they’ve been giving us all along is, in itself, yet another lie.

For that to be true, there would need to be a sensor in the phone to determine how you’re holding the phone AND something in the software that would basically say “If the user is holding the phone this way, display the correct signal strength instead of the fake +2 strength we usually report”.

Do you really think that both of those elements are in the iPhone 4 and that, somehow, Apple “missed” the fact that somebody had written in a routine to check how the phone was being held and change how the signal strength was displayed? Of course not.

This is just one more example of Apple feeding lie after lie to its customers in order to attempt to absolve themselves of responsibility for bad decision-making at the highest level. And in this case, poor quality control and testing, too.

AT&T is letting most current iPhone customers upgrade for the standard new contract price (with a 2-year extension of course)
  • iFixYourI have found the first chink in the iPhone 4′s armor: That special glass that’s used on the front and back? The one Apple claims is 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic?
